The Do’s and Don’ts of AI

Stephen King said, “Books are a uniquely human medium.” With the use of AI, it’s important that we keep the human voice prevalent so that readers can continue to identify with the characters. Artificial intelligence is becoming more and more common across industries. What is its place in book writing? Here are a few simple do’s and don’ts when using AI in the book writing process.

Do

  • Use AI to help you with writer’s blocks. AI can help brainstorm ideas, generate prompts, and provide initial drafts to overcome writer's block.

  • Enhance creativity and plot twists. Leverage AI to explore different writing styles, tones, and formats. It can help you experiment and discover new creative directions.

  • Create complex character arcs. AI can help create detailed character profiles, including background, personality traits, goals, and conflicts. These profiles can serve as a foundation for developing complex and believable character arcs.

  • Be transparent about using AI. If AI tools significantly contribute to your work, give appropriate credit or acknowledgment. Transparency builds trust with your audience.

  • Stay abreast of new AI technology. This will allow you to take advantage of new features and capabilities.

Don’t

  • Use AI to write your book word for word. Ensure that the content generated respects copyright laws, avoids plagiarism, and adheres to ethical guidelines. Use AI responsibly.

  • Don’t overlook the need for the human voice. AI does not give a human tone to writing. Always review and modify AI-generated content to align with your voice and style. Personalization ensures the content feels authentic and human.

  • Don’t use AI as a research site. Double-check any facts, statistics, or information AI tools provide to ensure accuracy. AI-generated content might contain errors or outdated information.

  • Don’t assume AI is perfect. AI tools can make mistakes and have limitations. Always critically assess the output and use your judgment to make necessary improvements.

  • Don’t neglect editing. AI-generated content often needs significant editing. Skipping this step can result in content that is incoherent, incorrect, or misaligned with your goals.
