Writing Exercises to Spark Creativity
Sometimes, writing can be frustrating, especially when you lose that spark. Authors oftentimes run into writing blocks and have a hard time overcoming them. The added pressures of deadlines can make writing even more daunting than it should be. Here are five ways you can spark creativity when writing:
Visual Prompt
Find an interesting photo, painting, or random object. Write a story or scene inspired by it, focusing on sensory details. This will engage your imagination and help you visualize scenarios.
Character Interview
Write a mock interview with one of your characters. Ask them questions about their life, goals, and secrets. This is a great activity for character development, as it deepens your understanding of your characters.
Dream Diary
Keep a notebook by your bed and jot down dreams immediately upon waking. Use them as inspiration for stories or poems. Writing down what you remember from your dreams will allow you to tap into surreal and subconscious ideas.
Freewriting
This is an oldie but a goodie. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and write continuously without stopping to think or edit. Let your thoughts flow freely, even if they seem random or nonsensical. Freewriting will help you bypass the inner critic and tap into raw ideas.
Reverse Storytelling
Write a story starting with the ending and work backward. As I embark on my sci-fi/ fantasy journey as an author, I find this exercise to be very helpful. This will encourage nonlinear thinking and creative plotting.
